Personal experiences in Cameroon
In October 2010 a variety of people in Cameroon was interviewed about the female condom. Apart from the regular users, also pharmacy retailers, representatives of local NGO’s, health workers at hospitals and young people gave their opinion. Especially at the little barber stores where female condoms are being sold at a 100 Francs each, women talked openly about their experiences.
Mercy Ngala Mukake is 34 years old, married and mother of three children. She is a Secondary school teacher: “I want to use the female condom for family planning especially after my third child. I don’t want unwanted pregnancies. Previously my husband would not want to use the male condom during sex. He would tell me he would withdraw when its time to ejaculate but when the time comes he begins to behave funny. So I prefer something that I can wear and he would feel free.”

Doris Root, married and mother of four children, is the owner of a Hairdressing Salon: “Sex is natural. That is what I tell my girls. I also introduced the female condom to my daughter of 22.”
