PROGRAMMES IN NIGERIA AND CAMEROON

Large-scale programming in selected countries is considered a key activity. In Nigeria and Cameroon programmes have been set up.

Due to non-availability of the product, the high price and a lack of general public awareness, the demand for female condoms is insufficient. All these factors will be addressed through a combination of three types of activities: a) demand creation, b) supply chain management and c) inclusion of the female condom in existing programmes and health services.
The purposes in the three pilot countries are to:
• increase demand for the female condom
• make female condoms widely available at convenient places, at all times and at an affordable price
• document the experience and make it available for interested parties
• encourage the publicly acceptation of the female condom as a commodity that enables women to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights

In Cameroon UAFC works in coöperation with the Association Camerounaise pour le Marketing (ACMS) and in Nigeria with the Society for Family Health (SFH).

DECLARATION ON FC BY CAMEROON GOVERNMENT

In October 2009 the government of Cameroon published a declaration on the Female Condom.

INTERVIEW WITH VICTORIA ARCHIBONG, SFH

"I believe the introduction of the male condoms was relatively easier. This could be because it was easier to target men as the “dominant” party in relationships and the ones who will wear the condoms. There was also a lot of support from donors and IPs. The female condom is regarded more as a “woman thing”. Some men may feel threatened as the female condom will empower women in demonstrating their sexual and reproductive health rights. For Female condom programming, programmers have to be more creative and strategic."
