From January to March 2011 the UAFC Joint Programme in Nigeria started rolling out the new programme strategies for 2011 comprising of rural access interventions, targeted tertiary educational institution interventions and working through hairdressers and barbers. These interventions were added tot the 2011 implementation mix to further promote programme coverage and female condom visibility. Scaling up to the last set of new sites within the three focal states of Delta, Edo and Lagos involved advocacy visits to gate keepers, influencers and other key stakeholders, community mobilizations and sensitizations on the UAFC Joint Programme. Furthermore capacity building was done for new partners.
Capacity building and training
A total of 232 people (150 women and 82 men) were trained within this quarter, of which 20 (10 women and 10 men) Interpersonal Communication conductors in tertiary educational institutions, 39 (32 women and 7 men) NGO workers as part of the rural access strategy, and 173 hairdressers and barbers (108 women and 65 men). More attention was given to hairdressers, following the positive examples in Zimbabwe and Cameroon. In addition, 999 Patented Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMV) (435 women and 564 men) were sensitized on benefits and use of FC as part of the strategy to increase product access and availability. This brings the total number of people trained within this quarter at 1,231.
Creating awareness and demand
SFH (Society for Family Health) and partners on the UAFC programme organised community outreaches, local drama and rallies in this quarter, during which community members were sensitized on FC use and benefits, and were also provided first hand demonstration on FC insertion. Referrals and linkages to female condom distribution were also carried out. These events were attended by 223,872 people (134,351 women and 89,521 men). NGO and CBO partners also integrated female condom message delivery into their activities (seminars, rallies and outreaches) reaching another 121,788 people (77,291 women and 44,497 men). This brings the total outreach for this quarter at 345,660 people.
Sales and free sampling
The total number of female condoms sold in Nigeria increased from 279,144 in the last quarter of 2010 to 361,008 in the first quarter of 2011. 52,180 female condoms were distributed for free. This brings the total number of female condoms (all FC2) distributed in Nigeria in Q1 2011 at 413,188.
Linking & Learning
Findings and recommendations from the Nigerbus and qualitative FC User Profile studies which have become available in this quarter, will be considered for future programming and constitute part of the learning process.
